ok, boredom calls, so here's a thread:
everyone has favourite songs, everyone has favourite bands, but what would you say are the songs that help identify yourself as a person, in essence what are the 5 songs that you feel sum you up as a person and why.
converge - last light
converge for me are a band i relate to in terms of energy, aggression and lyrical content. this song encapsulates a feeling of urgency and dependancy that i feel i understand
glassjaw - hotel of the white locust
this song is a good reprentative of my jealous side, i often feel cheated and betrayed when my feelings are hurt and this song is a fine example of that feeling being conveyed
blood brothers - burn piano island burn
its chaotic and dissonant in places, the vocalists screech and wail against a backdrop of spastic guitar and drums, and then suddenly its shifted to an upbeat melody, lyrically its about giving more than you expect.
mr bungle - love is a fist
this song sums me up quite well, lyrically it is a little bit askew, its structure is somewhat unpredictable and veers between an ambient funk and an outlandish circus organ
melt banana - lost parts stinging me so cold
this song is fast, energetic and alot of fun, it always reminds me of the feeling i get going to gigs or skating, that rush of energy and upbeat feeling

Oh my...this could take some time.
1. Pink Floyd - Echoes. Probably the best song they ever did in 30-odd years. The soft vocal harmonies over a soundscape that prompts minds-eye visions of otherworldly coastal landscapes (Roger Dean?) lead into a wierd interlude of random noises before effortlessly returning to the previous soothing melody. It's calm yet unpredictable in places, which i think i am.
2. Explosions in the Sky - Your Hand in Mine. Depending on what mood i'm in, this song either makes me feel really elated or really melancholy. Sometimes even both. It takes a special song to be able to do that.
3. Laura - Every Light. This is the only song available to download from this band, and therefore the only one ive heard, but something about the buildup and the final explosion of melody and noise always makes me feel really alive. Brilliant song.
4. Boards of Canada - Roygbiv. A song filled with innocent, childlike joy, though with something in it that seems darker, more mysterious, more sinister. A reminder that nothing is really what it seems.
5. Sigur Rós - Gong. A strangely upbeat song, though without losing the band's signature beautiful, ambient sound. I listen to this song before i go to sleep most nights.
PRETENTIOUSEST POST EVER!

R.E.M- Nightswimming. Yes, its slow and meaningful and its played on piano, but I don't give a shit. Reminds me of the happiest and most carefree I've ever been in my life. Michael Stipe really does have an incredible voice and this song is my antidrug. Always in my CD player if I can't sleep.
Absolutely fantastic song and album.

I'd like to make it clear first, that I don't give a shit what the songs original meaning or intention was, this is just about what I see in them.
Soundgarden - 4th of July:
This song represents my deeper and perhaps somewhat darker side (no I'm not a goth). It's strange though, the slow, drawn out nature of this song also helps me too calm down.
Korn - Make Believe:
This song represents the pent up agression that often builds up within me. Feeling like I want to smash the shit out of something basically.
The Pixies - Where is my Mind:
This song is despair, I really can't think of anything else to add here.
R.E.M. - Talk about the passion:
This song is the good in me. Also represents the softy in me

Quasi - All the same:
This song represents the regrets I've had and how I've come to live with them. Always makes me kinda teary eyed to be honest.

Ok, so here goes:
Buck 65 - Fifteen Minutes To Live
An extension of my own self gratifying yet questioning and devolved arrogance. It's a kind of all things to all men statement of intent, a clever, witty abstract, which covers all things and none. I'd have this as my CV if only convention allowed it.
DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince – Summertime
Oh, come on. I’m about as metal as it gets, but damn if a light warm breeze doesn’t make me feel like this tune. This tune is my summer. It strikes a fine line with Skee Lo’s “I Wish”, PM Dawn’s “Set Adrift On Memory Bliss” and a line from Clerks. The line from Clerks is:
But you hate people.
Yes, but I love social gatherings, ironic, isn’t it.
Skid Row – Youth Gone Wild
Yeah, so when I was young, and dealing with all the ‘issues’ that you do when you’re young, this was my tune. It taught me to dig my heels in and prove them wrong, and I did. God help the youth who have nothing but whining ‘emo’ to get them through.
Josh Martinez – Under Abstract Art
A laboured lament on why relationships fail. I wholeheartedly relate to far too much of this track. It’s a soundtrack to the end of every relationship I’ve ever been in. It sucks, but the boy hit the nail on the head with this one.
Pelican – Drought.
Now, I’m not too sure of where they were coming from, but to me this is all about persistence. It’s about the slog, it’s about the trudge, it’s about getting shit done. It’s about the ability to see the fruit of your labour, and know the labour of the other guy that let you even start your labour.
The Mars Volta – Televators
An image of death.

Ooh ta, now I don't look so much like the stupid newbie who drags up past posts outa boredom...I'm going to join in...although it's a tough one fersure as I have many many faves! I don't like trying to sum up my identity with anything really as it is mutable...here's a stab though:
Kate Bush - Under Ice
She was my heroine when I was a teenager and I still love her music today. All of it. It makes me feel things, it moves me, it conjures up times past, it conjures up a swelling mood...my soul feels well fed with this music. She is the type of quirky that I like. And I like a lot of quirky. Oh and this song is just dark and beautiful, it haunts and I can play it again and again without getting tired.
Andrew Bird - A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left
More quirky. I love the whistling and the ease with which one can sing along or hum or whistle to his stuff. It's like you already know the song before long, even though it is unpredictable. Andrew Bird is pure magic.
Satie - Gnossiene no. 1
This reminds me of my ancestors, it feels Eastern/Northern European and it's so so so beautiful. It's sad, it's lilting, it makes me want to sway, shut my eyes and move with it. I grew up listening to classical music and I still have a deep love for the classics.
Patrick Wolf - Wind in the Wires
Again, this music feeds my soul, it makes my heart sing and dance in my chest. I feel I know where this came from. I identify with much of his stuff.
Bjork - Play Dead
It sums up feelings of deep sadness that I can identify with from time to time. I still love this one and it still gives me goosebumps to listen to it. Just love it, simple as. Used to dance to it all the way back when on the dancefloor (how?! It was more of a morose swaying motion really)
