This for me is probably the trailer I have been most aniticpating ever, as I can finally get to see how movement on the game Skate is going to be, and omg I am delighted.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlHnnXr3blU Everything from how a skater gets into a grind or sets up for an Ollie is perfect, even the sounds of the board tapping the ground as the skater Ollies or grinding along a ledge on the trucks sounds just like it does in real life. Also in Gamespot's hands on article you find out how the game is going to be controlled.
QUOTE
"The left analog stick controls your skater's direction, and the right analog stick is responsible for the wealth of tricks you possess in your arsenal. Unlike the limited punch repertoire in Fight Night, there are a ton of tricks in Skate that you'll be able to pull off with the right stick by moving it in different directions. For example, a basic ollie is executed by pushing down and then up with the stick; you can do a nollie, essentially a reversed ollie, by moving the stick up then down. Moving the stick up and slightly to the left or right will cause your skater to perform basic kickflips or heelflips.
Skate's complexity comes from the variety of motions you can make with the right analog stick. For some tricks, you'll move the stick off at one angle then finish off by moving the stick in an entirely new angle. For others, you'll want to trace the outside of the analog stick's range of motion, which is similar to how you would pull off a haymaker punch. The idea here seems to be that a lot of different tricks are available under your right thumb. Indeed, EA had a small laminated poster on display that showed all of the different moves on the right analog stick. The key to nailing tricks is for you to be as accurate as possible with the right analog stick, though the intricacy of the controls means it will take an awful lot of practice to get the tricks you want.
Other controls in the game include the left and right triggers, which are used for grabbing the board with either your left or right hand. Interestingly, you can tweak your grab in midair by using the right analog stick for some extra variety on your trick. Manuals and reverse manuals are controlled by pulling back (or pushing forward) very slightly with the right stick; with a little practice we were able to land tricks into a manual, which feels pretty good, especially the first time you do it."

I think the control system is what the skateboarding games needed, to actualy move the stick instead of tapping square or something.
Looks great, should take a big chunk out of TH series fo sho.

I posted this in the Project 8 thread earlier, you thieving fuck.

But yeah, this does look more realistic than the Tony Hawk series. Like the way the character pushes and the fact that the speed changes instead of being exactly the same all the time.

Especially on the grinds! Like when he did the b/s 50.50 tailslide he stopped a bit when he came out....God this game looks awesome!

Me and Wilko were invited up by a PR company, but Wilks couldn't make it....I'll write it up now infact, should only take a few hours.
On another note, I've just managed to blag a load of gear off R1 to give away in a competition here too, so keep your eyes peeled over the coming weeks!

It looks horrible. Ridiculous Tony Hawk style change from an ollie off a bank to a rail.
If they sort the realism out, and the "floatyness" of the physics, then I may consider buying it. Until then, I'll leave it.

Just my opinion (which given this is my second post won't mean much)
With regards to the picture is it posible it could look exaggerated because of the camera angle, as it shows the same jump from another angle after and it doesn't look as bad.
Also I think you would have to bear in mind more then half the people that will buy the game probably can't or don't skateboard which means they have to make it playable for them. Unfortunatly this means making things easier and more interesting (regarding the sideways comment)
I know this sometimes make games unrealistic but how many best sellers have been true to life?
Fozzz
Apr 17 2007, 04:58 PM
You don't want a game that's ridiculously true to life, that isn't the problem in my eyes. It's just trying too hard to have realistic movements for the skaters and it just doesn't. It looks so rigid and fake, I can't really put it into words but it is... whatever I think it is

Overall, it doesn't look that bad, I liked:
the sketchiness of the wallrides
the powerslide at the end of a run
the indy drop into the bank.
the changes in speed were perfect
The wavy arms to look like the character was balancing out the trick
The park
But my only criticisms are:
Some of the airs out of ramps were WAY to high
The manuals actually look fucking awful, do I stand still with my arms stretched out in the same position for 2 seconds and then suddenly click back into my normal stance? No. The same goes for the grinds, like the nose blunt on the big stairs.
Some of the ollies looked far too synthetic. I expected them to be a little synthetic, but they just look unrealistic.
The tricks looked floaty
When he did a tailslide across a ledge which looked at least 15ft long?!
After the tricks had been caught, the time taken before the landing was far too long.
Overall, not great. But good enough to play while it's raining or you've snapped your leg.

The new flick thing looks so sick, looks really good how you have to use a slight bit of effort to land a trick. However, i can see most people getting pissed and just revert back to THP8. But i'm probably definately buying this now.

Like both trailers really, games looking good. However, all the angles and stuff make the skating look lush and that, but I doubt it'd actually be like that when your playing it, probably just the simple view like on THP8 unless i'm wrong maybe. As for the Mega Ramp, not really excited about that, as airing out of huge massive ramps and stuff you can do on most of the skate games released. It does look cool though, i must say.

That Danny Way trailer made the physics look so OTT.

I can't work out what's wrong with it.
It should all be completely perfect, but where Tony Hawks have managed to go right in the style/graphics department, skate manages to have cocked it all up again.
It all seems really... Rigid. I can't explain it.
I'm still buying it, though.
