Hey,
Anyone like progressive rock/metal such as Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater or Riverside? I expect not but it's worth a try...
Prog is nearly all I listen to, in comparison everything else seems bland.

Dream Theater are a class act.
Angra and Symphony X are good; and quite progressive.

dream theatre; great musicians, terrible songwriters. their talent is undeniable but i wouldn't really call them a prog band in the actual sense.
i like to see a progressive edge in all genres of music, be it in instrumentation or song structure, but there needs to be a line drawn between progressive music and technical music, even though often the 2 may well go hand in hand.

Oh so I'm not alone in my love for progressive cock.

Yeah I've been to see PT twice @ the London Forum and DT once at Wembley. Both were good, PT are better live and DT bored me at some parts.

Mainly for what darran pointed out; they're brilliant musicians, but it's like they've learnt everything they know out of books rather than just sitting down and writing decent songs.
Plus i skate with a couple of self-proclaimed "metalheads" who still think it's the 80's and who can't get through a musical discussion without telling me how amazing Dream Theater are. It was a real disappointment to download a few songs and realise that not only are they all essentially the same, they sound like a bad version of Rush

Hmm... I've never looked at them with that perspective before, but you're right. Great technical ability, not-so-great songwriting skills (although there are exceptions, such as The Dark Eternal Night off the new album).

Who are these Pelican people you lot keep mentioning?
BTW forgot to mention Opeth! My second favourite prog band of all time, and in my opinion the best metal band out there.

Pelican are an awesome post-rock/progressive band. Check them out.
If we're going down the progressive post-rock route, then I'm gonna recommend This Will Destroy You. One of my favourite bands, for sure.
