Yeah, piracy is constantly going on, and still will, seems that crystal castles have taken the complete piss out of the creative commons copywrite law. gets me pretty annoyed this..

It's recently come to light that Crystal Castles, a Toronto-based band, has been heavily sampling music from several chip music artists without obtaining permission or crediting them. Lo-bat's tracks Bibibi and Tizzy, from his 8bitpeoples release Game Boy, are just two instances of this.

8bitpeoples release all their music under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND License. What this means is that you're free to share it however you like, with whomever you like. They ask in return is that you credit it appropriately, do not use it for any commercial purposes, and obtain permission before creating any derivative works (such as remixing it or using it as the soundtrack for a video). Crystal Castles has violated every term of this license in their use of Lo-Bat's music. Furthermore, they have committed copyright infringement by sampling other artists such as Covox, whose drums from his song Sunday appear in no less than four Crystal Castles songs.

For more information on Crystal Castles questionable musical approach, the rising trend of chip music plagiarism, and the Creative Commons take a look at these articles:

Coley
they released it for free you'd think they'd bother to credit it to them

75% of the artists I listen to are guilty of this. Except they do it better and don't steal from underground collectives like chiptune, thus making Crystal Castles a bit raas, and everyone else awesome.

I still like Crystal Castles. One of them is a bit harsh, but I'd be a total hypocrite if I stopped listening to them because of it. And please, one drum beat from a song sampled? Who the fuck cares? Fair play to hate on ripping a whole song from creative commons, but ONE FUCKING DRUM BEAT doesn't mean shit.
Edwin
yeah, fair enough

How close does this sound to loving and caring..

I don't know where I fall on this, is it more 'sampling' than 'stealing' as such, surely a quick mention in the album sleeve or something, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius pip sampled a shitload on their album and still credited everyone, but they did sampled some bigger artists and had record industry heavies to deal with, so I guess they had to.

CI guess they thought creative commons means 'Take what you like'... besides... it's not like chiptunes are THAT hard to make...

I do feel that samples should only go uncredited if they are used creatively, distorted or recorded on a new instrument (Aerodynamic is a good example of creative sampling that goes uncredited (Sister Sledge)). Crystal Castles did not do this, but only once or twice. The rest is fine in my books.

That one I find is perfectly acceptable. Can't remember what track I was thinking of, but one is a shameful rip off.

Read that a while ago on the Sabrepulse Myspace page. It won;t achieve anything, the NME kids are still going to lap them up.
Dr. HeartStrings
because they are ignorant to use NME as a source of musical guidance.

all hope is lost.
