Worse than the Bronx: knifings blamed on hip hop

Hip-hop music is fuelling gun and knife crime in Britain, says music star Tricky.

He says some parts of the United Kingdom are now worse than New York's notorious Bronx district.


"I love hip hop. But it has to take some responsibility for the gun culture we've got over here. We're getting super-violent," the Press Association reported Tricky, whose real name in Adrian Thaws, telling Uncut music magazine. "You can walk around the Bronx for days on end and nobody bothers you. In England, you can say the wrong thing in a pub and, before you know it, you've got a bottle over your head or a bullet in your brain. English people have got quicker tempers."


Tricky, 40, says modern fashion also has contributed to violence among young people.

"What have they got to get them through hard times? We had punk rock and ska and bands that made you feel you could do anything," said the musician, singer and producer. "We were into clothes in a big way. Anything to take our minds off the stress. They don't have to think about getting dressed. They get the baseball cap and trainers on, that's all it is.

"But they've got nothing to take the pressure off. That's maybe why they are more violent than we were. That and the fact they have access to serious artillery.

"We used to throw stones at each other. Now they shoot bullets at each other. Hip-hop has got a lot to do with that."

New York City has a zero tolarence to muggings, etc. something which we should have over here. when i was in nyc the closest thing that i got to being mugged was some rapper trying to sell me cds.

I heard some stories after everyone came back from barca last year, although most them were just how ryan 10 pointed some transexual hooker in the face.

Another thing I hate when going abroad is mobs of idiots carrting fake shit around in bedsheets, well okay I lie the people that buy them are the worst.

its not hip hop music that causes the problem. the real solution ( i think) is down to the background of the kids involved. im not sayin that anyone who lives in a certain area is bad, or anyone from a family without enough money for a comfortable living is a bad person. the cause to this problem is another problem in itself that has to be dealed with. this usualy is something to do with the problems at home, problems with the family or things that happen when your out on road.(some people will no exactly what i mean by the last sentence, but its to long to go into details.)

If someone has a rough upbringing it doesn't mean they'll want to go out and kill people. One of my best mates had a truly horrible childhood but i've never seen him in a fight, let alone carrying weapons with the intention of going out and killing people. It's simply not an excuse.
