Full Version: Another New Guy - Don't Hate Me For My Basic Questions! :)

Hey guys.

Just thought Id do a little intro before I ask questions beings as Im new here. Im Jonathan, 21 years old from Inverness, although down Glasgow most of the time at University.

I've decided to start skateboarding. My flat down in Glasgow is literally 5 mins walk from the skatepark in Kelvingrove park, and after walking past it every day for the past year I've decided it time to give it a go. So now for my questions which have probably been asked millions of times before (I've read the stickies, so dont flame me!)

Basically Im looking for a complete board, cause after researching boards online for the past 2 days my brain is about to melt with all the options available! Like I said Im from Inverness, and there seems to be absolutely no skate shops around so my only option is to buy online. Im pretty bummed about that cause I would have liked to have gone into a shop and bored a guy stupid with all my questions smile.gif

I am a complete beginner but I am looking for a board that will last me a while, so I've got a budget of around £70 for it. Im looking for a good all rounder board, because although Ill be starting out riding around and doing ollies and all that jazz, I might get stupid one day and the bowls and half pipes in the park will be too much to resist smile.gif (the broken wrists will teach me a lesson Im guessing!)

Ive been looking at the following sites:

http://www.routeone.co.uk/
http://www.kateskates.co.uk/

are they fairly decent places to buy from?

Now for brands. The second site has some good deals on World Industries boards - are they any good? I remember from my wannabe-skater days in school brands like blind (purely cause of the cool graphics) but are they any good? Im not fussed about graphics to be honest because they will only get scratched off and Im guessing plain boards will be cheaper.

I guess Im just looking for some board brand suggestions, because the options available to me are just confusing the hell out of me! Oh, and width wise should I be looking for a 7.5" or 7.75" board? (size 9 feet, 5'10)

I would really appreciate any advice you guys can give me!

Thanks in advance,

Jonathan

Edit: I guess I should say buying in Glasgow isn't really an option. I will be next down there in a months time, and Im really looking to get in a fair bit of practice before then as I have lots of time to dedicate to it during the holidays.

first of all nice to meet you.

second, dont but from those site. this is becuase you should support SOS (skater owend shops)
heres a link to a list of a few of them:
http://sk8uk.co.uk/skateboarding-guide/skater-owned-shops/.

try to buy a euro deck (they're cheaper aswell)

In your budget youll probably be looking at either fracture or enuff

deck width doesnt matter. its all down to preference. but i suggest getting a 7.75

I don't really care about SOS half the time even though i should. By buying fom other sites i save myself so much. i usually do buy SOS but only when im in london and need a new deck or i pop a bearing, then i just go slam.
Eddy
I'm from Inverness too!

*highfive*

And yeah I agree, there are no SOS around here which sucks. I have to ride a crappy Argos set up until I can afford one off the internet T_T

And the purpose built facilities are rather crap.

There's only the tiny street park at Walker Park and the two half Pipes near Bught Park...

As for most of the pavements....T_T

No way, another Invernesian! smile.gif

I agree, the skate facilities here suck. I think the nearest proper skatepark is in Elgin (45 mins drive away) which is insane. Im not sure if you know the Westhill area at all, but most of my practice will be happening in the driving school car park at night ... then I can go back down to Glasgow and embarrass myself ...

A few years ago there used to be a SOS in town (the name escapes me) but Im not sure what happened to it. North 57 used to be good too (from skaters Ive talked to) but after a look on the internet its apparently shut down sad.gif

Think Im going to buy the board tomorrow as Im itching to get practicing. Im still interested in world industry boards (unless anyone has anything bad to say about them?)

These are the ones that caught my attention:

http://tinyurl.com/5k7ks4 (Ok, I admit the graphic caught my eye smile.gif )
http://tinyurl.com/5nwwcc

Any opinions appreciated!

I fully see why there is the need to support SOS's. Ill have a look on the recommended sites later tonight for similar boards.
Mike.
Never skated a world industries deck myself but iv heard they've started to get abit shit.
Coley
same, never riden but not heard good things
Adamregskater
hahaha Started? They went rather shitty a while ago your best of choosing a different deck.

Try SS20 they'll point you in the right direction.

Hello, welcome to the forums.

Thisset up is priced at £75 from Scene in Preston. You get any £40 deck (from their Board section), Union trucks, Blueprint Belong wheels 52mm/ 53mm/ 54mm, Blueprint Dukes Abec 5 bearings, riser pads, hardware and Jessups griptape. There is also the option to upgrade bearings and stuff.

Another good store to use is Native who are based in Newcastle. They do a blank set up for £50.

While simultaneously helping to destroy the UK skating industry.

Last i heard, there's an SOS in Glasgow called Focus.
They'll help you out as far as buying your first board goes, but as it'll be your first one don't assume that you'll get more out of it if you spend more. Get cheaper stuff before you decide whether skating's for you or not smile.gif

Yeah I think I know where you're meaning.

And North 57 closed down a few months back. There's a comic book store there now XD

I'm thinking about building a 4ft halfpipe in my back garden, just so I can practice there and save myself the embarrassment of face-planting on the public ones laugh.gif
