well you need to learn shuvits first. youll find them easier to land as they wont fly off.

im assuming your doing these backside so:
back foot needs to go on the tail and and foward and your front foot on the front bolts and in the middle of the deck. now push backwards with your backfoot. whilst rotating keep your front foot over the board. when the decks made the rotation but your feet down on the deck.

Jump maybe half a foot to the right (or rather, forwards... the way you're facing) whilst doing them.

This is pretty much right. Remember the board rotation is likely to pivot around the back truck so you'll have to compensate for that.

Right.
First of all, you really shouldn't start off learning tricks stationary, as every single trick, without fail, is completely different when you're moving. And let's face it, you're not going to skate on one spot all the time.
So i don't go into an essay i'll break pop shuvs down into steps:
1. Before you start with pop shuvs, how are your ollies? Given that you're new to skating i'm going to assume you're still working on getting them higher, but if you can pop them up and get off the floor you already have the first step down without even realising it. The weight distribution and foot positions are pretty much the same for both tricks, so just set up like you would for an ollie.
2. If you were doing an ollie, your front foot would drag up to the nose as you jump, making your board come up to your feet. With a pop shuvit, your front foot shouldn't really move from where it started, as the trick is all in your back foot "shoving" the board around as you pop. This is done by giving your back foot a small push behind you as your tail hits the floor. Pushing it too hard means your board will overspin and most likely flip away from you, but it doesn't take much force at all to spin if you get a good pop. Only giving it a small push will also help keep your board underneath you and stop it flying away.
Extra Tip: Pop down, not out behind you. You won't get any height on it if it doesn't pop up.
3. Getting the timing for the shove can be a bit tricky, but with practise it should become second nature to you. You should start the push behind you at exatly the same time as your tail hits the floor. This means it pops straight up as it spins and doesnt spin away from you. As you jump up, your front foot shouldn't drag up to the nose like an ollie, but should jump straight up with the board to stop it flipping.
That did turn out to be an essay.
Oh well.

Rodney's how to is pretty much all you need to know but perhaps you could try learning the movement with out the ollie part to get used to it and then once you have that down all you need to do is add the ollie/pop part.

if you can do them satnding still its the exact same concept.
you just have to make sure your fully commited to it because if not youll bail.
just keep trying at it for a while and eventually youll get it.
