Coley
ive just started stenciling and i now i need paint. Ive got a couple stencils ready, some small some big.
i have no idea about what to use
ive been on www.skinnycap.com
i was wondering if any of you could link me to a site, tell me what sort of paint to get and also the places in london to get it.
MK Tom
When I used to write, I got my stuff from http://www.valleyofchrome.com, but I'd buy well known brands like Belton and Montana
Edwin
get onto skinnycap, they are a local scottish shop that are agreeing to stock my zine.
also check out fat buddha another scottish graff shop.
anychance on having a look at the stencils you have going? are they multilayered?
you would be best going with the leading brands of paint, montana and monster. Then you need to consider about thickness of caps for spraying, different widths of nozzles producing different effects.
Coley
yeh i have no idea on cap size and shiz.ill upload the stencil in a mo
Coley

needs a caption

what a legend
Edwin
nice one, right.
you need to eliminate the floating islands, as in the bits of white that have no connection to the outside ( e.g. if you cut the top ones legs out, where would the little white white bits go? tthis tutorial might explain it better

In the bottom one you need to loose the red, well not entirely, you can lay down a red base coat, then layer the white and black over it. Again the islands rule applies,
Coley
yeh ive already bridged the gaps. only one i havnt is in the first and thats the one inbetween the legs. It doest look right without it but i dont know how to bridge it without it looking stupid
Rodney
In my experience, skate shops usually sell a limited supply of painting stuff.
Failing that, there's usually a couple of people painting at Southbank when its quieter, i suppose you could always ask them where they get their stuff from...
Coley
yeh i dont live in london, its just gregs going there fri, might be able to get me some, said he'd ask in slam city if they knew where to get some.
only shop near me is hard edge which is owned by some old guy that defo wont sell it
Darkest
Colmans do Paint pens. It's a pity Addict stopped selling cans. I need some for my next griptape.

How do you even make stencils out of regular photos? Always fancied doing some, could never be bothered to go through the hassle of converting a photograph into a stencil though.

"i'm looking for a slogan to go beneath my stencil"
Coley
nice, ill keep that in mind

simple steps
get photoshop cs2 (cs3 fucks it up)
open up photo in it
desaturate it (B&W)
Gaugasiun blur (found under filters) this will make it blurred and will give you definate B&W after the next step
whack up the contrast to full and fiddle with the brightness
generally takes 30 seconds unless your making a complicated (fiddling with more stuff in photoshop)
Mike.
Used your instructions in cs3, it worked fine.
Treflip
Did the same thing in GIMP, works. Having a hard time trying to get them looking right though, Photoshop is probably better.

when i use the college comps it never seems to work properly
Mike.
Only thing i noticed was if i didn't tick the "Use Legacy" box when altering the brightness and contrast it didn't work, with that ticked it worked fine.
Coley
ahhh ok ill try that when i go back to college
dicky boy
i did one

hint: shes sexiest woman on earth
Edwin
you need to sharpen that shit up before thinking of cutting it, i'm just uploading one i cut today, hold-on

Yes. Get that up all over England without delay. Too many people have forgotten about Mario.
Edwin
thats not to bad actually
the under spray is due to the stencil not being stuck down enough, try using some spray fixative/tiny bits of bluetack, another method i have seen used is placing a mesh over the whole stencils then spraying it, but i reckon thats just a bit naff..
Oh and leave the paint it dry before lifting the stencil! ( thats why there are bobbly paint drops above his head)

Matt2k
Reckon it looks better with the bobbly bits.
Peter.

~How I combat underspray~

i use double-sided tape, not the sellotape brand but guess this would be the same tho

You just cut off thin strips and stick them very close to any vulnerable edges which might get undersprayed...press down firmly when you got your stencil in position...and viola! NO underspray, ever.

SOOO much better than blutac or fixative etc IMO happy.gif

[btw wait until the stencil is dry before you rip it off cos the glue from the tape is really sticky when its just sprayed]

like this

And even if your can's running out you can still get an interesting effect. Bit blotchy tho haha

Coley
erm hate to burst your bubble but youve got it on all of them

mine just on photoshop and ive used gaussian blur to help thats why it looks like it.

also just use spray mount, much much easier
Nath
How do you guys actually cut the stencil out? scissors?
Coley
razor blade or stencil knife

erm no i haven't. By islands, if you mean when I pick the stencil up, nothing falls out of it, then no, there are no islands. Just very, very flimsy tho lol

Hence the double-sided tape
Nath
I quite like the over spray!
Edwin
I would say that that under spray has worked wonders on that second last spray.
Coley
i like the effect in cases but you have it
