Quote from Sidewalk Forums:

Bay 66 Skatepark did suffer a large fire on Saturday night at around midnight. The motorway above the park was closed as fire swept above it from beneath the underside of it. It was not just a small fire whatsoever...

Fireman are still assessing the damage to the back end of the street course to detect the cause of the fire. That entire area is fully wiped out right now but firemen had it under control fairly quickly. Rumours of deliberate arson are flying around. We are not going to comment an any of these rumours until the assessment by the fire brigade has been fully carried out and reported back to us.

This is obviously a huge loss to the skate park and skateboarding in general in the South East but the park remains open and 80% of it is certainly still skateable. so do not think that gates are closed and will be for months because this is not the case. Your support is needed now more than any over time, the park remains open, business as usual.

I would appreciate it if you would think of all of the hard work that has gone into that place over the last 8 years and not sit there and slag it off. It is the hardest job in the UK to run a skate park in London due to rents, availablity of land, insurance and much more.. People run skate parks because they love skateboarding, not to make billions of pounds. Please remember that before you post negative remarks on this forum or on others. It will take a while to get this section of the park back to normal and a completely new structure will be built in it's place once we assess all the various options we have.

I can promise the people that regularly visit the park that we will be working on this as quickly as possible until we can get this section back up and running. Who knows how long this will take, but bit by bit i am sure you will be updated with news. It will be a lot of hard work but we are more than capable to deal with it and get it back up and running for this years Xmas Jam...

Big thanks to all who have posted their condolences, we will get this back up and running and better than ever, i can assure you of that.

Zac

im gutted.
if it is deliberate (seems like a really FREAK accident otherwise - not jumping to any conclusions of any sort though i hasten to add) it makes me really sad that the society in which we live has such f*cked up attitudes on so many levels.
im really sorry for the guys who build, run and look after the park as well as to us the skateboarders, bmxers and even bladers who show that place so much love.

as they say always look on the bright side, look at it as a possitive fresh new change for the park and i hope it can be restored to its former glory.

have to say im so glad i skated the park for the first time in years before this happend.
i promise i wont complain about the price of entry fee again, cos mentioned by sidewalk the park needs all the support it can get right now.

We heard about this fire by someone coming up to the bowls who's working at bay66... from what he said I first thought it was the whole park being burnt down or at least around 75% or so.

When arriving at the park (we went there for taking some pictures, as you may have guessed from the pics of my photostream, http://flickr.com/photos/aeris/sets/1022213/ ) my very first thought was: hmm... it is not as bad as i thought.... sure, it's been a lot of work which has been destroyed.... and insurances will go up, or at least this is very likely....
But it is still mostly skateable (must be even more than 80%) and it's insured and there's gonna be something new, swish....
and everything will be fine again one day. instead of complaining about what cannot be changed anymore we should be happy that most parts are still there. 'nuff said...

alright miss.know-it-all. no need to be arsey.
from the pictures it looks like the whole flipping parks gone, that end was rad and the bit i personally enjoyed most.
even if its just the back end that aint there, where are we supposed go after coming
off the ski jump or roll-in? we'll have to stop and walk back...

what the fire has destroyed is the all important flow of the park, the thing that keeps it moving.
without flow no parks worth skating.

yeah the park is run by XboX which is microsoft who have a few bob, im assuming insurance covers this anyway so it'll be back to its former glory and probably better.
my point is that if it was done deliberately thats well f*ked up.

im not "complaining" about any thing, just offering condolences to whom it may concern, and voicing my opinion - which im sure is shared by other skateboarders as well as bmxers and bladers.

its not run by xbox or microsoft in the slightest. if that was the case theyd have millions or ounds to play with it just receives sponsorship from the xbox brand or whatever.
