What???? There are actually skater owned shops? Be thankful you actually have one. The only skate shop nearby is a rollerblading one, which stocks about 2 decks and overcharges. I order off Katesskates.com though, but they have a couple of stores don't they? So it's not really that bad is it?

I am sorry Jezzer but i find the comment you directed at Mongo, or whoever you didn't make it clear, was totally uncalled for.
It didn't even make sense when reading the rest of the thread as it was our opinions on a skate owned store, nothing to do with being perverts or being 60.

I have ordered from HSC before as there just isnt any skate shops near me let alone skater owned ones. Wisdom in Manchester was my nearest but that has closed down, Exit still exists in Manchester but i don't like it in there, the staff don't seem to have the time of day for you.
There is a shop called Note in Bones skatepark but they have even less time for you than Exit. The last time i bought anyting from there the guy never looked at me once or spoke to me which i think is just plain rude. No matter what type of business you run your customers are what keep the shop open so at the least you should be friendly and curteous to your customers.
I would much rather give my money to a skater owned store and keep it going rather than let places like HSC and Route One increase their profit margins. The last time i phoned HSC was for a deck and i asked what size they had in on a particular deck and they hadn't a clue what i was talking about. At least in a skater owned store they would know a lot more than how to operate a till.

Leave Jezzer alone- it's not his fault he's a pathetic little worm sorrowfully trying to eke out his existence doing something not in the slightest creative or imaginative in the hope that he will cause controversy and 'have a laugh'. Bit sad really.

Not any more buddy, I went the other day and the shop is gone. Which sucked cos I was hoping to buy some more shoes
On an vaguely related note, the new ramps at Bones are pretty good. Big and scary, but good

well for a start, i didnt read it all coz i aint got long online, but ya right bigger chain stores are killing of the little shops who give the best service. i mean i rang up route one to ask about the size of a board and the guy on the fone thought they all came in the same size. thats y i shop at shops who know wot they are talking bout. kates skates is a good online shop, and my local store native is the best.

Wow, thanks Jezzer. I needed you to tell me what to think about mongo. Without your valuable input I don't think I would have been able to form an opinion myself.
It never fails to amaze me when users appear out of nowhere and start insulting board regulars.
It just seems so clueless.
...and ditto, what has this post got to do with perverts? Maybe it's time for a random poll

I thought I might start a bit of a debate going here, to spice things up...
Where do people stand on the issue of mail order and chain-stores?
HSC+ and Route 1 are prime examples of things not being all rosy and bright in the world of skateboard related retail. They are (forgive the melodrama) strangling the life out of smaller shops.
I've never been sponsored, and I never will be, but I simply would have had to have stopped skating if it wasnt for my local shop flowing me stuff while at uni and when I was skint. The same goes for a lot of the guys I've skated with over time. Its this level of commitment to a scene that keeps it alive. And it's a level of commitment you simply will not get from the mail order brigade.
Sure, its tempting when you can get the latest pair of bubble-enhanced uber shoes for 30 quid cheaper via mail order, but in my book, you are just making problems for you and everybody else later on down the line.
Skating, it is fairly clear isn't going anywhere. Its been around long enough now for it to be considered permanent, so much as something can be in modern society, but as in the past its popularity will rise and fall. Give it a few years and skating simply won't be as cool as it is now, I'll still be skating, and I pray to whoever is listening that all of you are as well, but thousands won't be. It's these people that mail order companies thrive on, selling to the poorly informed masses, and when these kids move onto the 'next big thing' so will the mail order folk. They are in it for the money and nothing else.
Your local skate shop is the hub of your scene. Its where you can go to hang out, watch videos and hook up with people to skate with. If you remove yourself from this, you miss out on a lot of what skating has to offer. Shop owners are the long suffering surrogate dads of the skate community, and they deserve our backing.
I totally understand that mail order is cheaper and when you are skint, or on a low to no income, cheap is good, but your local shop will be there for you when this sh*tstorm blows over. So please, please don't use the mail order companies unless you really have to, they are putting small shops out of the running every month, and skating needs them around.
What say you..?

Actually, I'm quite a happy pervert thank you very much.
It's your call dude, shop where you like. The mail order folks will NOT have your back when, and I do mean when, the bubble bursts, to them you are just an order number. The reason there aren't that many skater owned shops is because these big companies price them out of the market, its basic economics.
Call me a hippie (or a sad pervert) if you like, but it saddens me greatly to see skating turned into just another cash cow to be exploited by whoever has the most money. To some extent there has always, and will always be an element of greed and money making involved, but it has never been on this scale, even in the neon spandex days of the 80's.
Skating is bigger than you, and bigger than me, but when you are on that board, you are a representative of all of us, all I ask is that you have some respect for what has gone before you. You can take the insular approach if you want, and just skate away from your scene, but you will miss out on so much.
Oh, and if you are going to try and insult me, at least take the time to write a sentence that works. It would read better like this:
You really are quite sad aren't you. What are you 55-60? You sad pervert.
Go get yourself an education, maybe even respond to the question I asked, and then we'll talk.
Llama.
