Hi, I've logged in to see if I can help our scouts, in South Yorkshire, gain a proficience badge in boarding. It covers maintenance, safety and some basic moves. Is there a \"body\" like exists in other interests, eg coaches or champions etc who would be contacted or even willing to help with this project?
Cheers
JS
There is one avenue you might like to try, the Works skatepark in Leeds runs an extreme sports academy, who are offering tuition, from what i have read about it they are looking to get some sort of team together for the olympics 2008 (i think this might be for bmx). Now they might be able to help out if you get in touch with them.
Here is their website: http://www.theworksskatepark.co.uk/index.html

i think i see what your getting at i tired to do a part of my D of E award on skating, and if you go to parks then theyre usually very helpful. what wouldyou have to do, just improve or would you need qualifications. cos there are no skating qualifications, and skatings all the better for it. but if you want evidence of improvement, get a video of youu before and after, and you can point out your style, technical ability and confidence has improved, and so on. what would you have to do exactly for this badgework?

Requirements are:
Safety measures
Board parts
Board maintenance
Some moves, have to look up exactly which ones.
Could look on sites to find demonstration vids, couldn't I

You would be surprised how many older skaters there are Jan.
Any questions you have don't hesitate to ask.
Here is my email if you would prefer: vivpickford@hotmail.com
I think the works skatepark might be a good avenue to try though as they might have skaters that are of an adequate level to help with the badges.

Tony Hawks Trick Tips is a good video to buy- it's good for complete beginners- it'll show information about skateboards, plus help on everything starting from pushing to tricks. I'd recommend it if you are willing to spend money. If not then i'd suggest keep searching the web

By body do you mean like the FA for football or summit? In that case then no. Skatin isn't like other sports- there's no rules, regulations. Sure there are skating organisations, but no one is 'in charge' of skating. You sound like you are completely new to skating, so anyway, any questions, just ask any of us. I'm sure we'll all do our best to help

Thanks for your answers. Will question you all more when I've a bit more time. If I post the syllabus for the badgework, can you advise how to get scouts to go ahead to achieve it?
I am new to skating - so new I'm far too old to set foot on one. My lad and his mates will probably like to talk to someone in the future.
We've just got a new skatepark in the town so kids are all getting interested. Have downloaded safety advice, names of parts, but need how to carry out routine maintenance.
Cheers all

a trip to the worx could be the incentive to get them going - trip for people who get badge

I think this is a great idea, i might have stayed in the Brownies if this was being offered! hehe
The theory side of this would be easy to put together, board maintenance and board parts and your safety measures, but basic moves might be a bit more tricky, would you want to include tricks in this or just the basic pushing and steering?
As Stealste said, a lot of this is covered in Tony Hawks Trick Tips 1, but that would mean spending some money, its about £15-£20.
yeah its been a flood lucky me and flood control shotgun are here
