Starting Again
We get quite a few members joining the forums who have previously skated in the late 80’s/early 90’s and have shown an interest in taking it back up again. As such we have compiled a re-introduction as it were to help starting up again a bit easier.
Boards
The first thing you may notice when you purchase a new deck is the size. Most boards are now between 7.25X28 inches (these are quite small and tend to be designed more for children) and 8.5×31 inches. If you are not quite ready to update yourself with a new deck and would rather stick with something a bit more familiar you can find plenty of old school decks and accessories on eBay or I recommend www.skatepool.com where you can find decks, rails and wheels amongst other things. If you are wanting to go for a new style deck, perhaps go into your local skate shop and see if they will let you try some out for size. 7.75” width normally comes out the most popular when polled on the forums with 7.5 coming second.
Trucks
Trucks are now smaller than that of their old school counterparts; their axle width is now 19cms as opposed to 23cm, you will also find you cannot put old school trucks onto new style decks as the holes to fit them on are not lengthy enough.
Wheels
When it comes to wheels most people have differing opinions what is the better brand. Some of the more popular brands on the forums are: Spitfires, Rictas and Blueprint. As with most things it comes down to personal choice so perhaps try one make and if you’re not happy with it go for another brand next time you buy.
Bearings
You can pick up cheap bearings from all skate shops, however if you want to invest in some that might last you a while then most people rate Bones Reds, they are normally priced at around £15 give or take. Bones also do other bearings but they vary in price. If you want to look after your bearings so they will last take a look at the How Do I?section of the skateboard guides.
Hardware
Rubbers are now referred to as bushings. Risers, which on old trucks came attached, can now be bought separately. Some people tend not to bother with them but they can cut down on wheel bite. Rib bones can still be bought at a few places but are rarely used these days; the same goes for tail bones. A few skate shops may still stock them; I have seen rib bones being sold in a few skatepark shops.
Now you have had a quick catch up on the bits and bobs of skateboarding, go out get yourself a set up and skate! It might take you a while to get your style back and re-learn the basics. Perhaps read the article on Am I Too Old To Skate?
